Opinion is the wilderness between knowledge and ignorance. So says Christina Ricci’s Yellowjackets alter ego, Misty Quigley, and we’ll be honest, we’re not sure what it means. Misty, like most of the other characters on the show, is a mystery, and according to the woman who plays her, things are going to get even weirder on the new season of the Showtime hit.

“There’s a couple of new cast members… and they’re amazing,” Ricci told Newsweek. Lauren Ambrose was announced in August as a new member of the cast, which also includes Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell and Samantha Hanratty, who plays teenage Misty. “And the scripts are just so good. Each one that we’ve seen is better than the last. So we’re really excited.”

Ricci’s portrayal of adult Misty—a highly manipulative, potentially sociopathic tag-along—earned the star one of Yellowjackets’ seven Emmy nominations in July. As Season 2 has begun filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, the show is set to return sometime at the start of the new year, according to Esquire.

“It feels like to me Season 2 is going to be better than Season 1,” Ricci continued. “There’s some real surprising, crazy stuff that happens very early on.” For fans of Season 1—in which some very surprising, crazy stuff happened—that’s really saying something.”

For Ricci, 42, Misty is just the latest entry on a résumé that began with her role, when she was 9, in 1990’s Mermaids. Working alongside Cher, Ricci told Newsweek, had a lasting impact on the actress.

“[Cher] always conducted herself with such grace, but still such strength and fairness,” Ricci said. “This impression she gave [was] like, nobody was going to f**k with her. But she didn’t have to be mean or anything to achieve that. And that was such a great example for me to have as a young woman.”

Mermaids may have given Ricci her start, but she quickly attained superstardom thanks to her take on the death-obsessed Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family.

Netflix will soon release an Addams Family spin-off series based on the character Ricci made famous. Titled Wednesday, the show will star actress Jenna Ortega as the lead, with Ricci appearing in a yet-to-be-disclosed role.

Ricci described returning to the Addams Family universe as “super fun,” and that she’s excited by Ortega’s fresh approach to the character. She’s also flattered that series producer and director Tim Burton—the gothic fantasy mastermind known for films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice—asked her to join.

“I love him so much. It’s so great to be able to work with him,” she said of Burton, with whom she previously collaborated on 1999’s Sleepy Hollow. “I have a lot of sentimental feelings around the Addams Family world and the character of Wednesday. So to be asked to be a part of the new iteration of this character was really meaningful to me and felt really nice.”

Ricci has other irons in the fire, too. She recently announced a partnership with pet food brand Stella & Chewy’s for its “All You Need Is Raw” campaign.

On top of parenting two children, Ricci is also dog mom of three. Her oldest furry friend is named Karen, a 13-year-old chihuahua-dachshund mix. Ricci said she loves what Stella & Chewy’s food is doing for her dogs, especially as she tries to preempt any pain that Karen may be experiencing as she ages.

When she’s not training her youngest pup or caring for her kids, Ricci remains focused on honing her craft. And while she didn’t take home an Emmy for Misty this awards season, there’s always next year.

“I can’t really talk about any of it,” Ricci said of her character’s trajectory this season. “I guess the only thing that I can say is… in this season, we get to see a little bit more of Misty’s internal life, which we didn’t see a lot of last year.”

It’s almost trick-or-treating season, which means a lot of family fun and tasty snacks for actress and dog lover Christina Ricci.

The Yellowjackets star and mom of two recently sat down with Parade to discuss her new partnership with pet food brand Stella & Chewy’s as part of its “All You Need is Raw” campaign. She also told us all about her family’s Halloween traditions–dogs included.

During our chat, Ricci explained that her yearly spooky season routine involves finding a costume for her 8-year-old Freddie (who she shares with ex James Heerdegen) and doing some trick-or-treating with his best friend around the neighborhood. Meanwhile, her daughter, Cleopatra—who she shares with husband Mark Hampton—is still less than one year old and “doesn’t care about Halloween yet,” Ricci tells us.

The Addams Family alum adds that she used to love to “get out candy and watch scary movies” on Halloween before she had children and started spending the night collecting candy and sweets with her family.

But of course, the treats this season aren’t limited to candy, as Ricci is also spoiling her fur babies–especially her 13-year-old dog, Karen, who she describes as her “first baby”–with healthy and nutritious dog snacks from Stella & Chewy’s.

“I wanted to not only keep her alive as long as possible but also really make sure she was comfortable and healthy,” Ricci said of her search for the best options for her eldest pup. “I looked into the sort of nutritional ways that I can support her better, and I found Stella & Chewy’s.”

The actress also mentioned that she fell in love with the brand for her two younger dogs, Logan and Patrick, for similar reasons, “the thought, the attention, the care that goes into creating this kind of food for pets really reflects sort of the love, thought and care that we put into not only our interactions with our dogs but how we care for them.”

Christina Ricci was a featured guest at the annual Texas Trailblazers luncheon for The Family Place, the largest provider of services for victims of domestic violence in Texas. You can watch a short clip from her appearance in the video below.

Christina Ricci will be the first to tell you she doesn’t like her terrifying “Yellowjackets” character Misty Quigley.

“I mean, she’s not somebody that I would choose to be friends with,” Ricci tells CNN of her Emmy-nominated role. Still, she does like playing her even if she is untrustworthy.

“I really enjoy playing characters that don’t follow the sort of normal social constraints that we do,” she adds. “And the freedom of playing someone who’s not bound by any sort of morality but her own, that stuff is really fun. And I like playing characters that do not express their emotions in a typical way.”

Ricci, who’s been acting since her film debut at age 9 in “Mermaids” alongside Cher, says she often thinks she knows where the writers will go with Misty on the series, but is often led in an unexpected direction instead.

Her process for playing someone so complicated is to take all the things she does know about Misty, like her “obsessive need to try to connect with people and make friends” or her “30 years of constant rejection” and ask what that turns a person into.

“What is the behavior that manifests from that?” she asks. “Really my process is just sort of taking the facts that I know about a character and extrapolating and just sort of filling out the character, fleshing a character out based on behavior since I think would be born from their experience.”

Currently filming Season 2, Ricci’s own experience on set is different from the one she had during the freshman season, when she was pregnant with her now nine-month-old daughter, Cleo, and hid it on camera with baggy sweaters and overalls.

“It is much easier to perform not pregnant,” she says, laughing. “Even just being able to like curl up, you know? Last year, there was a point when they were like, ‘You reach out and pick this up off the ground,’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t reach out and pick anything off the ground.’ And then there were steps I had to run up and down, but I was pregnant and I had sciatica.”

Ricci also has an eight-year-old son named Freddie she shares with her ex, James Heerdegen. And she keeps her hands full with three fur babies, dogs she says she loves more than most people.

“I really love animals,” she says. “I don’t consider myself a very friendly person, but I will always talk to dogs and cats”.

In her time off, she’s partnered with Stella & Chewy’s because she loves the company’s raw, natural dog food, especially for her aging best furry friend Karen, named for late singer Karen Carpenter.

“Karen’s been traveling with me since I was 29, and, oh my God, before I had babies, she was my first baby,” she says. “And as she got older, I really wanted to keep her comfortable and living as long as she possibly can. So I looked into what the best nutrition would be for her.”

The campaign, she says, “is all about raw love and showing your love for your animals in all the ways you do, but also through feeding them really well.”

Balancing filming, family and multiple producing projects isn’t easy, but Ricci, who refreshingly admits to having “an amazing nanny,” says, “it’s like any other family with two working parents – you just make it work.”

Christina Ricci is a proud dog mom, but she doesn’t discriminate.

“I’m an equal-opportunity animal lover. I really love cats as much as I love dogs,” the Yellowjackets actress and recent Emmy nominee, 42, tells PEOPLE amid her partnership with Stella & Chewy’s for the brand’s “All You Need Is Raw” campaign.

Ricci says that aside from her three pups — named Logan, Patrick, and Karen Carpenter — her family (which also includes her celebrity-hairdresser husband Mark Hampton, 8-year-old son Freddie and daughter Cleopatra, 9 months) had a cat who, sadly, died a couple of months ago.

And the actress has had pets her “whole life,” having grown up “with three dogs and a cat,” so she’s excited to partner with a brand she feels prioritizes animal health.

“Karen has been with me since I was about 29 years old. And I always say she’s my first baby,” Ricci says. “And as she got older, I really wanted to make sure that not only did she live as long as possible, but that she lives comfortably and happily, and without the ailments that older dogs suffer from.”

Karen has also seen both of Ricci’s children become part of her family and has formed a special bond with baby Cleo as of late.

“She always comes over and sits by the baby and lets the baby pet her,” the Wednesday actress tells PEOPLE. “And Freddie used to get in Karen’s dog bed with her.”

“And then our big dog, Logan, always tries to sneak a kiss in. So he’ll be running through the kitchen, and he’ll sneak over to where [Cleo is] playing and just lick her face,” Ricci continues. “He’s a huge dog. So his tongue is literally suffocating for her.”

Wednesday will premiere all of its episodes on November 23, 2022 — which happens to be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

We also have a name for Christina’s character in the series! She will be playing a character named “Marilyn Thornhill”.
