Zap2it: How would you characterize the relationship of sisters Lizzie and Emma Borden on Lifetime’s “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles”?

Christina Ricci: I think it’s a very need-based relationship. Lizzie sort of views her as her property, and Emma’s always taken care of her but it’s not, at least from Lizzie’s point of view, a loving relationship. She’s not really capable of love in a normal way.

Zap2it: Is Lizzie a fun character to play?

Christina Ricci: Yeah, really fun. Anything that is fantastic and sort of extreme is really fun to do as an actor, at least for me.

Zap2it: How did you approach creating her?

Christina Ricci: Well, I think a lot of the character is based on the action, sort of, [which] implies who she is, really. Somebody who is able to take human life like this and actually derive pleasure from it is going to be a certain type of character (laughs). We definitely decided that she was sociopathic, that she either played at the emotions of a normal functioning person but that she probably didn’t have them for herself.

Zap2it: Was shedding her at the end of the day difficult?

Christina Ricci: No not really. I mean, this is a very lighthearted kind of piece. I mean, it’s just supposed to be fun and sort of gory and fantastic. So I think there were like two emotional scenes in the whole series for my character because she doesn’t really experience emotion. So it’s not the kind of thing, a kind of heavy role where you go home and you live with it or are affected by it.

In just a few short weeks Lifetime will premiere its new limited series ‘The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.’ The series stars Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Christina Ricci, reprising her role as the notorious murder suspect from the network’s hit original movie ‘Lizzie Borden Took An Ax’.

Ahead of the premiere on Sunday, April 5, at 10pm ET/PT, the network has released a new trailer for the limited series showing viewers what to expect when the series goes live. Joining Ricci on screen is Screen Actors Guild Award winner Clea DuVall (Argo) as Lizzie’s sister, Emma, in the new eight-part series.

The Lizzie Borden Chronicles delivers an intense and fictionalized account of actual events and people surrounding Lizzie’s life after her controversial acquittal of the horrific double murder of her father and stepmother in 1892, when the exonerated figure lives a life awash in newfound celebrity filled with scandalous love affairs. But when numerous people close to Lizzie – ranging from her half-brother William (Andrew Howard, Hatfields & McCoys™) to Broadway luminaries and her business associate/underworld kingpin Mr. Flowers (Emmy nominee Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad) – start to mysteriously die under brutal and strange circumstances, legendary Pinkerton detective Charlie Siringo (Cole Hauser, Good Will Hunting) becomes determined to prove her involvement in their ultimate demise. Jessy Schram (Falling Skies) plays Nancy O’Keefe, an alluring and ambitious actress and dancer who befriends Lizzie, and Emmy nominee John Heard (The Sopranos) portrays William Almy, the business partner of Lizzie’s murdered father, Andrew.

The Lizzie Borden Chronicles is produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Judith Verno (Lizzie Borden Took An Ax) and Ricci. The limited series is written by Greg Small & Rich Blaney (Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret), Barbara Nance (House of Lies), Jason Grote (Mad Men) and David Simkins (Grimm). Stephen Kay (Sons of Anarchy) directs episodes one and two, while Russell Mulcahy (Teen Wolf) directs episodes three and four, and Howard Deutch (American Horror Story) helms episodes five and six.
